National educational leader to give
next lecture in president's series
Tom Ehrlich, an eminent national scholar and author,
will visit campus to speak on the theme of "Moral
and Civic Learning" as part of President Sidney
Ribeau's annual lecture series.
The lecture begins at 2 p.m. in 101 Olscamp Hall
on April 11.
Ehrlich's talk reflects the theme of this year's series,
"Creating an Ecology of Character," which has
always been one of the primary foci of Ribeau's administration.
Ehrlich's presentation represents a continuation of the
University's discourse on principled communities. The
five critical components of a principled community-social
purpose, appreciation of different voices, ethical leadership,
critical thinking, and clear expectations -provide the
basis for an environment in which to foster character
development.
Ehrlich is a senior scholar at the Carnegie Foundation
for the Advancement of Teaching, where his major emphasis
is "education outcomes in the development of values,
character and citizenship." He co-directs the foundation's
Higher Education and the Development of Moral and Civic
Responsibility Program. Ehrlich is also a Distinguished
University Scholar at California State University and
has regular teaching assignments at other universities.
A former president of Indiana University, Ehrlich has
extensive experience as an academic and civic leader.
He is author or editor of eight books including Civic
Responsibility in Higher Education published by ACE
Press in 2000.
This lecture offers an opportunity for faculty, staff
and students, as well as Bowling Green community members,
alumni and friends of the University, to hear a national
leader on the subject of the role of colleges and universities
in creating the society of the future through values exploration.
