Latino Issues Conference looks at nation

New York Daily News columnist Juan Gonzalez, winner of the 1998 George Polk Award in journalism, will keynote the seventh annual Latino Issues Conferences to be held Thursday (April 12) in 101 Olscamp Hall. Gonzalez will discuss "A History of Latinos in America."

The day-long event will feature lectures and panel discussions related to the theme "A Profile of Our America." The annual conference provides an opportunity for students and others to hear speakers discuss a variety of Latino issues being debated nationally.

The conference also will feature sessions titled "U.S.-LatinAmerican Relations," "Latinos in the Arts and Mass Media," "Between Work and Music" and "Latino Mural: Voice, Dance and Ensemble." Topics will include U.S. and Cuban baseball, amnesty for undocumented workers, and the border between the United States and Mexico.

Among the guest speakers are music columnist Ramiro Burr, who will give a presentation on Tejano and regional Mexican music; writer Lucretia Guerrero, who will describe "How to Make Your Short Story Collection More Marketable," and television producer Heli Sota, who will discuss Hispanics and TV in the United States.

Sponsors of the conference include the Latino Student Union, University Activities Organization, Multicultural Activities, Latino Cultural Arts Committee, JUNTOS, Sigma Lambda Delta international fraternity, Office of Student Affairs, the Latino Networking Committee and Sigma Lambda Gamma sorority.

Admission is free but there is a charge for lunch. For reservations to attend, call 2-2642. See Monitor online for more details on the conference.
