Latino Issues Conference looks at
nation
New York Daily News columnist Juan Gonzalez, winner
of the 1998 George Polk Award in journalism, will keynote
the seventh annual Latino Issues Conferences to be held
Thursday (April 12) in 101 Olscamp Hall. Gonzalez will
discuss "A History of Latinos in America."
The day-long event will feature lectures and panel discussions
related to the theme "A Profile of Our America."
The annual conference provides an opportunity for students
and others to hear speakers discuss a variety of Latino
issues being debated nationally.
The conference also will feature sessions titled "U.S.-LatinAmerican
Relations," "Latinos in the Arts and Mass Media,"
"Between Work and Music" and "Latino Mural:
Voice, Dance and Ensemble." Topics will include U.S.
and Cuban baseball, amnesty for undocumented workers,
and the border between the United States and Mexico.
Among the guest speakers are music columnist Ramiro Burr,
who will give a presentation on Tejano and regional Mexican
music; writer Lucretia Guerrero, who will describe "How
to Make Your Short Story Collection More Marketable,"
and television producer Heli Sota, who will discuss Hispanics
and TV in the United States.
Sponsors of the conference include the Latino Student
Union, University Activities Organization, Multicultural
Activities, Latino Cultural Arts Committee, JUNTOS, Sigma
Lambda Delta international fraternity, Office of Student
Affairs, the Latino Networking Committee and Sigma Lambda
Gamma sorority.
Admission is free but there is a charge for lunch. For
