Dr. Mae Jemison, former shuttle astronaut, reads
from her book to students from area junior high
and high schools. Nearly 200 students came for "The
Key of Africana Heritage: A Youth Mini-Festival"
March 19 in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union. The
event was held in conjunction with the Africana
Studies Student Research Colloquium, at which Jemison
also spoke.
Dr. Mae Jemison, left, signs a copy of her book
for Halifu Osumare, a dance faculty member in the
School of Human Movement, Sport and Leisure Studies.
Jemison reconnected with Osumare, with whom she
had studied dance as an undergraduate at Stanford
University, at the Africana Studies Student Research
Colloquium. Jemison earned dual degrees in chemical
engineeting and Africana studies from the California
university.
