Dr. Mae Jemison, former shuttle astronaut, reads from her book to students from area junior high and high schools. Nearly 200 students came for "The Key of Africana Heritage: A Youth Mini-Festival" March 19 in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union. The event was held in conjunction with the Africana Studies Student Research Colloquium, at which Jemison also spoke.
Dr. Mae Jemison, left, signs a copy of her book for Halifu Osumare, a dance faculty member in the School of Human Movement, Sport and Leisure Studies. Jemison reconnected with Osumare, with whom she had studied dance as an undergraduate at Stanford University, at the Africana Studies Student Research Colloquium. Jemison earned dual degrees in chemical engineeting and Africana studies from the California university.
