Women’s History Month activities focus on success and achievement

The Women’s Center and Women’s Studies Program are sponsoring activities to celebrate Women’s History Month in March.

The keynote speaker for the month will be 1970 BGSU graduate Ohio Auditor Betty Montgomery, a 1970 BGSU graduate. Montgomery will speak at 7:30 p.m. March 18 in the Lenhart Grand Ballroom of the Bowen-Thompson Student Union. Her address will focus on the month’s theme, “Celebrating Women’s Triumphs.”

Montgomery, a Republican, earned her law degree at the University of Toledo and began her career as a criminal clerk in the Lucas County Common Pleas Court. She represented the city of Perrysburg and Wood County as prosecuting attorney and served as state senator and attorney general. The first woman to be Wood County prosecutor and state attorney general, she was elected as Ohio’s first female state auditor in November 2002.

The weekly Women’s Center Brown Bag Lunch Series will focus on women’s issues. On Wednesday (March 5), BGSU graduate student Kapinga Ngandu, a citizen of the Democratic Republic of Congo, will share her international experiences. Celebrating women’s educational triumphs is the topic on March 19, and on March 26 students can recognize their favorite professor or mentor with lunch. All luncheons take place from noon to 1 p.m. in 107 Hanna Hall.

Also this month, the theatre department will present the play “Vinegar Tom,” by Caryl Churchill, from March 20-23 at the Joe E. Brown Theatre in University Hall. The play tells the story of two 17th-century English women who are labeled as witches, and their struggle to gain self-respect and independence. Evening performances are at 8 p.m. March 20-22, with matinee performances at 2 p.m. on March 22 and 23. Tickets are $5, and can be purchased by calling the box office at 2-2719. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door prior to the performances.

A variety of women’s history events also will take place at the union. Each Wednesday, excluding spring break, films that highlight triumphant women will be screened in the union theater. The films are “The Long Walk Home,” “Gorillas in the Mist” and “Fried Green Tomatoes.” Each film begins at 8 p.m.

For more information on Women’s History Month, contact the Women’s Center at 2-7227.
