Just In time
for Valentine's Day—
Jerome Library celebrates 55 years of Prout Chapel weddings
Since 1950, couples from all over northwest Ohio have
sought out Prout Chapel on the BGSU campus to consecrate
their wedding vows. To celebrate the 55th anniversary
of the chapel, Jerome Library has mounted an exhibit
of wedding pictures and information about the rich history
of the site. The exhibit will remain in the first floor
cases of the library through Feb. 28.
Titled "Chapel of Love," the exhibit features
photos of weddings from almost every decade and of couples
who graduated from BGSU in the ‘50's, ‘70's,
‘80's, ‘90's and last year. Highlights include
portraits of three generations of the Blair family of
Bowling Green celebrating their nuptials at the chapel.
The display cases also include a photo album from the
Schimpf family, a portrait from Don and Noel Hinde (who
now live in California), several recent celebrations
and a brief history of the chapel.
"We posted one brief notice in our online employee
newsletter and received over 30 responses," Executive
Vice President Linda Dobb said. "People obviously
have great affection for the chapel and love sharing
their pictures."
The exhibit was mounted based on a special request by
northwest Ohio residents Joe and Cathy Steffan, who
were looking for a way to honor the 50th anniversary
of their friends the Hindes. "It just kind of snowballed
from there," Dobb said.
Exhibit curator Sherry Gray said she has especially
enjoyed mounting this exhibit. "It goes so well
with a Valentine's Day theme and gives us a way to celebrate
campus history, too."
