For only the third time in 11 years, the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Scholarship in Film Studies has been awarded. Sara Kathryn
Lawrence, a junior majoring in film studies, was presented a $500 check by James Frasher, Lillian Gish’s longtime agent, at
an October ceremony in the Gish Film Theater.
The Gish scholarship recognizes one junior film studies major who exhibits true excellence in film criticism and/or filmmaking,
excels academically in film studies courses as well as other University classes, and whose character is unquestionable.
“Although we have the opportunity to award this high honor each academic year, we have only presented this award three times
in my 11 years as a member of the Gish Film Theater staff,” said Dr. Brett Holden, associate curator of the Gish Film Theater
and Gallery. “This award is given only to those students who would meet the high expectations Lillian held for herself during
her wonderfully influential career.”
A member of the National Honor Society while a student at Grand Valley High School in Orwell, Ohio, Lawrence had already decided
to be a film studies major when she came to BGSU in 2003. She has been “passionately addicted to Turner Classic Movies” from
the age of 13, is interested in Hollywood’s Golden Age and hopes to one day become a film historian. Highly interested in
pre-Code-era films, as well as those in the genre of film noir, she has produced several successful critical papers examining
film history.
Lawrence has a 3.9 grade point average in film studies and a 3.8 GPA overall. In addition to her stellar academic performance,
said Dr. Cynthia Baron, film studies, she is an “insightful, well-balanced, self-disciplined, warm, caring and imaginative
human being” who excels in all areas.
