The Student Affairs offices, now housed in the Saddlemire Student Services Building, will be moving to Conklin North Hall beginning in June or July due to the demolition of Saddlemire, Dr. Ed Whipple, vice president for student affairs, has announced.

The rationale for razing Saddlemire is twofold: because of the extensive and costly renovations needed to maintain Saddlemire, a new student services building has been on the University’s master plan for several years, and the new Wolfe Center for the Arts will be better suited for the space now occupied by Saddlemire.

Other halls were considered but, due to their popularity with students, Conklin North was selected over those sites. Conklin North served as temporary office quarters once before when the Psychology Building was under renovation. It already has been updated with the necessary technology and disability access. The relocation is expected to last for the next three to five years.

The building has enough space to accommodate all the Student Affairs staff currently housed in Saddlemire, Whipple said. Four Greek meeting rooms will be relocated on campus.

Information regarding the relocation of offices not under the Student Affairs umbrella will be communicated as those locations are finalized.

Meanwhile, with its almost 7,000 beds on campus and in University-leased apartments, BGSU has the capacity to accommodate the roughly 250 beds currently in Conklin North without adding more rooms, Whipple said.

A new student services building is slated to be constructed just north of the Commons building. State funding is being sought to get the project under way.
