Lunchtime seminar to focus on office ergonomics
The campus community is invited to attend a brown bag lunch seminar called "Are You Ergonomically Correct? Preventing Injuries
at Work," from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 15) in 207 Bowen-Thompson Student Union.
The speaker will be Jeanne Matthews, an occupational therapist from Wood County Hospital. Faculty and staff are encouraged
to contact Chris Haar at

with issues they would like Matthews to address. Participants are also invited to forward pictures of their workstations
to Haar for Matthews to evaluate.
The Administrative Staff Council Professional Development Committee is sponsoring the seminar.
More to come in Tech Trend Series
Four more events are planned in the Tech Trend Series, which explores issues and trends in technology teaching and learning.
The next presentation is “Laptops for Everyone? Possibilities and Challenges,” by Dr. Alfred Joyal, provost and vice president
for academic affairs at Northern Michigan University. Joyal will speak from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 17) in 228
Bowen-Thompson Student Union.
The next presentation, “Distance Learning: Trends, Opportunities and Current Statistics,” will be held Feb. 9 at the same
time and location. It will be a panel discussion among Bonnie Fink, visual communication and technology education; Sheryl
Hansen, director of Professional Development Programs for the Ohio Learning Network, and Connie Molnar, director of distance
learning at BGSU.
The series is sponsored by Information Technology Services and the offices of the executive vice president and the chief information
officer.
'
Candyfreak' author Steve Almond to read on campus
Steve Almond, author of
Candyfreak: A Journey Through the Chocolate Underbelly of America (Algonquin, 2004), will read in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union Theater at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 17).
The free event is part of the fifth annual Winter Wheat: Mid-American Review Festival of Writing (Nov. 17-20). The festival
features some 40 workshops for writers of all abilities, additional author readings and panel discussions.
Almond's Candyfreak earned acclaim for its quirky, "On the Road-meets-Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" look at the nation's—well,
mostly Almond's—obsession with candy. He is also a highly regarded fiction writer whose short-story collections include
The Evil B.B. Chow and Other Stories (Algonquin, 2005) and
My Life in Heavy Metal: Stories (Grove, 2003).
Other featured readers at the festival include award-winning fiction writer Edith Pearlman and Pushcart Prize nominee Tom
Noyes, as well as poets George Looney, Aimee Nezhukamatathil and Philip Memmer.
'How to Make the Portal Work for You'
A series of workshops will introduce MyBGSU users to the functions available within the Web portal and how to customize it
to meet individual needs.
The sessions are open to all BGSU faculty, staff and students. No registration is necessary. All scheduled for 2 p.m., sessions
will be held Friday (Nov. 18) in 128 Hayes Hall; Nov. 22 in 122 Jerome Library, and Dec. 2 and 9, both in 128 Hayes Hall.

Panel to discuss future of science and mathematics at BGSU
Faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences will discuss “The Future of Science and Mathematics at BGSU” at 3:30 p.m. Friday
(Nov. 18) in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union Theater.
Dr. Julie Barnes, computer science, will serve as moderator of the panel, which will include Dr. Donald Nieman, dean of arts
and sciences; Dr. Craig Zirbel, mathematics and statistics, and Dr. Peg Yacobucci, geology.
Audience members are encouraged to participate in the discussion, which is hosted by the Arts and Sciences Council and Nieman.
Campus Latino organization changes name
The Latino Networking Committee has adopted a new name to better express its identity, it has announced. The group will now
be known as the Latino Networking Alliance (LNA).
As Juan Enriquez, Center for Multicultural and Academic Initiatives (CMAI), explained, “To call ourselves a committee failed
to reflect the permanence of our group, or the unity that binds us in an effort to provide cultural support and a sense of
pride that is so critical to the diversity that makes up our Latino student body and community, while advancing the educational
cause to the northwest Ohio community. We are allied to instill a permanent, positive effect for the benefit of our greater
society.”
The group is open to Latino and non-Latino faculty and staff members alike, and invites the campus community to attend its
next meeting, at noon Friday (Nov. 18) in the Paulsen Conference Room on the fourth floor of the Saddlemire Student Services
Building.
Established in 1981 by Manny Vadillo, CMAI, the alliance has been instrumental in developing and overseeing several Latino-student
scholarships for the BGSU community. These include the Dr. Miguel Ornelas, Dr. Rene Ruiz, Dr. Rolando Andrade and the Diamante
scholarship awards.
