Arts & Sciences forum to look at change in relationships

From “hooking up” to living together to bearing children out of wedlock, the landscape of how relationships form in the U.S.
has undergone drastic changes. Dr. Scott Stanley, a research professor and co-director of the Center for Marital and Family
Studies at the University of Denver, will discuss these changes in “Sliding vs. Deciding: How the New Courtship Paradigm Imperils
Lifelong Love,” in the first of the College of Arts and Sciences forums, on Sept. 9.
Many potentially life-altering relationship transitions now happen before commitment develops. Stanley’s talk will cover themes
such as the nature of commitment, the dynamics of cohabitation and the implications of the emerging “hook-up” culture.
The forum is co-sponsored by BGSU’s National Center for Marriage Research. The free presentation begins at 12:30 p.m. in 201
Bowen-Thompson Student Union and is open to all, including classes.
A noon lunch beforehand includes cheddar baked potato soup, green salad and pasta salad, fresh fruit, beverages and dessert.
The cost is $7.75 plus tax and is payable by cash, check or BG1 Card. Reservations are due by Thursday (Sept. 4) to Mary Hitt
at 2-2340 or mjhitt@bgsu.edu.
