Saddlemire reminder
The coming weeks will see a considerable amount of noise and truck traffic emanating from the Saddlemire Student Services
Building as its demolition proceeds.
Next week, work at the site will be limited to Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, to accommodate student move-in beginning Thursday.
But that accommodation, along with the recent abatement of previously undiscovered asbestos in ceilings, has added seven to
10 days to the demolition period, extending it into early September.
The date that the building will be razed is still unknown, said Marc Brunner, project manager in the Office of Design and
Construction. Steel, copper and other building materials are being sorted on site for recycling, and after the structure is
down, its concrete will be ground for use as fill there—the future site of the Wolfe Center for the Arts.
The concrete grinding will be among the final steps in the demolition process, which will conclude with removal of fencing
and ground-cover steel plates, repair of sidewalks and grass reseeding, Brunner said.
Additional signs will be posted at Saddlemire, and efforts will be made to minimize disruption, including dust and traffic
control measures. Trucks will enter and exit the site via Ridge Street, which will be closed to traffic—except construction
and emergency vehicles—between Willard Drive and Mercer Road.
