AlertBG cell-phone text messages will be one method tested on March 12.
Watch for emergency communications test Wednesday
The University will test its emergency communication methods on Wednesday (March 12).
When the campuswide test begins, you will:
• Receive an email from the BGSU Police.
• See the test alert message on the University home page. (The site will still be usable during the test. Viewers may click on MyBGSU and Webmail, for instance.)
• Receive a cell-phone text message from AlertBG, if you have signed up for the service.
• Hear an announcement on the public address system if you are in Jerome Library, the Student Recreation Center or the residence halls.
• See an emergency alert on the background of PC screens in the computer labs.
All the March 12 messages will state that the message is only a test, not a real emergency. Unlike in a real situation, there will be no “all clear’ following the test.
This will not be a test of the University’s actual emergency preparedness but only of its technological capability for communication, the crisis committee emphasizes. The committee asks the campus community to help by filling out the survey that will be available after the test to assess how effective each method was. The survey will be at http://survey.bgsu.edu/surveys/IR/emcommtest/emcommtest.htm.
For those who have registered for AlertBG text messages on their cell phones, the test will also be an opportunity to see what an emergency message looks like and from what number it is sent.
To sign up for the text-message warning system, log in to MyBGSU on the home page (http://www.bgsu.edu) and then click on the AlertBG tab, to the right of the Welcome tab at the top of the page. Be sure to validate when you receive the confirmation email or text message from e2Campus, the service provider, in order to complete the process. The Technology Support Center, 2-0999, can assist with signing up.
