Dr. D.S. Chauhan



 

Professor of political science

Expertise: Public administration, labor relations, personnel and organizational theory. A native of India, he is very knowledgeable about the country and especially public administration in India and elsewhere in Asia. Additional language proficiency in Hindi, Sanskrit and Urdu.

Dr. Albert Dzur



 

Associate professor of political science


Expertise: Political theory, democratic theory and American political thought.
Current work is on the concept of “democratic professionalism,” which he applies to ethics in various professions from health care to law enforcement.

Dr. Neil Englehart



 

Associate professor of political science


Expertise: Asian politics, especially Burma (Myanmar), Thailand and Southeast Asia, but also China and India. Teaches a course on human rights. Also knowledgeable about ethnic conflict and international conflict in general. Current work is on state failure (collapse of central governments) and how countries can build civil society to avoid this.

Dr. David Jackson 

 

Associate professor of political science


Expertise: Popular culture and politics; the youth vote; the entertainment industry’s relationship to presidential candidates; Canadian government and politics; American government, including political socialization, American political institutions, political process, labor unions and politics, and political theory.


Credentials: Jackson holds a doctorate in political science from Wayne State University, where the topic of his dissertation was “The Influence of the Entertainment Media on the Political Values of American Youth.” Author of the book, “Entertainment and Politics: the Influence of Pop Culture on Young Adult Political Socialization” (Peter Lang Publishing, 2002), he also has written articles on entertainment and politics, and labor unions and politics for scholarly journals such as the Political Research Quarterly, American Politics Research, American Review of Canadian Studies, Harvard International Journal of Press/Politics, and British Journal of Canadian Studies. In 2007-08 he is a Fulbright Scholar at the Department of American Studies and Mass Media at University of Lodz, Poland.

Dr. Neal G. Jesse



 

Associate professor and Chair, Department of Political Science


Expertise: European politics, Britain, Ireland, Northern Ireland, ethnic conflict, foreign governments, game theory, historical war games, and collectible card games.


Credentials: Bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California-Santa Barbara; master’s degree and Ph.D. in political science from UCLA. His books include Identity and Institutions: Conflict Reduction in Divided Societies (SUNY, 2005), and Ethnic Conflict in the World: Institutions, Identities, and Conflict Management (Congressional Quarterly Press, forthcoming 2008) both co-authored with Kristen Williams (Clark University). In 2006 he was the Hallsworth Visiting Professor of Political Economy at the University of Manchester (United Kingdom). His research on Britain, Ireland, electoral systems, party systems and ethnic conflict has appeared in journals such as Electoral Studies, International Political Science Review, International Studies Quarterly, Political Psychology, New Hibernia Review/Iris Éireannach Nua, and Representation.

Dr. Jeffrey Peake



 

Associate professor of political science


Expertise: The American presidency; executive politics and presidential behavior; presidential-congressional relations; presidential-media relations; campaign finance; the passage of treaties.


Credentials: A 1992 graduate of Clemson University, Peake holds a Ph.D. in political science from Texas A&M University. He is the author of numerous journal articles in the American Journal of Political Science, the American Political Science Review and Political Research Quarterly, among others. His current research examines the effects of presidential rhetoric and domestic travel on national and local media and public opinion, to include a forthcoming article in Presidential Studies Quarterly—with Matthew Eshbaugh-Soha of the University of North Texas—on local newspaper coverage of President Bush’s attempt to reform Social Security in 2005. Peake is currently working on a book exploring presidential-congressional relations in the realm of international agreements, and has a forthcoming article on the topic with Glen Krutz of the University of Oklahoma, also in Presidential Studies Quarterly, titled “The Changing Nature of Presidential Policymaking on International Agreements.” Peake was a commentator during President George W. Bush’s locally televised visit to northwest Ohio, and has appeared several times on local PBS programs (“The Editors” and “The Journal”). In October 2004, he commented on MSNBC on the importance of Toledo in that year’s presidential campaign.

Dr. Marc Simon



 

Associate professor of Political Science


Expertise: International relations and foreign policy; armed conflicts; terrorism; the war in Iraq; political violence; nonviolent resistance; conflict resolution; economic sanctions; the United Nations; modeling and game theory. Particularly knowledgeable about East Timor, Haiti, Austria and France.


Credentials: Simon is the author of five articles in highly selective refereed journals, including “International Interactions”. He has given numerous presentations at professional conferences and has taken part in public debates on such issues as the possibility for Arab-Israeli peace, the U.S. presidential election in 2000, the war in Iraq, and whether North Korea will be the next Iraq. In 2007-08 he is a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor of International Relations at the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, Austria. He holds a Ph.D. from Indiana University and formerly taught there and at the University of Illinois-Chicago.

Tom Wiseman

Expertise: State and local politics, particularly northwest Ohio; resolution of conflicts between local governments; municipal solid waste issues.


Credentials: A former mayor of the city of Defiance and a Defiance County (Ohio) commissioner, he is co-author of a book about Vietnam War veterans titled “Reclaiming the Soul.”
