Avoided the limelight

“He was never one to seek the limelight. He just did the work that needed to be done, and then moved right along to the next project. A perfect example of this modesty is his contribution to Bowling Green’s own mascot Freddie Falcon. Russ supervised Delta Sigma Phi’s intramural sports team. In order to compete, the fraternity needed a mascot, as all the other teams already had. He suggested a falcon, the team decided on Freddie Falcon, and Mrs. Coffey sewed the first Freddie costume that Russ wore. However, since he never sought credit for his efforts, University records aren’t clear on exactly when Freddie was introduced. Russ never sought attention for himself, he just wanted what was best for Bowling Green.”

–Jim Ruehl, a former student and friend of Coffey, as well as a former BGSU football assistant coach
