Ron Culp

Ron Culp ’69 Culp began his NBA career with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1970-71, the first season for the expansion team. He joined Portland in 1974, and stayed with the Blazers until 1987. He left Portland for the Miami Heat in 1987, and this season began his 20th season with the team. Culp is in his 37th year in the NBA, and is the only athletic trainer/travel coordinator in Miami history. The Heat won the NBA title in 2006.

No one has been an athletic trainer in pro basketball for as many years. “This is a dream come true. I have been so fortunate. We work in the toy department of life. Other people go to work each day,” he says.

Culp says the toughest part of his job is when he needs to let a player know that his career is over, due in part to health concerns. “My best year is when no one knows who I am. My name never gets in the paper. No one stops me on the street,” he says.
