Fulbright program forms circle of learning, teaching
|

|
Just after World War II, when Arkansas Sen. J. William Fulbright proposed what have now become the Fulbright awards, his goal
was worldwide harmony and wisdom.
“The Fulbright Program aims to bring a little more knowledge, a little more reason and a little more compassion into world
affairs and thereby to increase the chance that nations will learn at least to live in peace and friendship,” Fulbright once
said.
He is now indirectly responsible for sending more than 255,000 scholarship recipients around the world since 1946. The Fulbright
Program awards 4,500 new grants annually and is mainly funded through government appropriations around the world, including
yearly $122 million from the U.S. Congress.
Under the Fulbright Program, many BGSU faculty study, do research and teach abroad, then return to the University—often with
their lives changed.
