The events of Aug. 6, 1945, left an indelible mark on Hiroko Nakamoto. The 1954 BGSU graduate was only a teenager when the atomic bomb destroyed her hometown of Hiroshima, Japan. Nakamoto believes that creating a monument to peace in a city that was devastated by unpeaceful means would send a global message.
The project, which she initiated in 1983 with a gift to the Hiroshima government, will include green space and a monument by a river in front of Hiroshima Railway Station. “Gateway to Peace” will symbolize the importance of peace and provide a beautiful site.
Because this year marks the 60th anniversary of Hiroshima’s bombing, Nakamoto is working diligently to make this project happen now.
