Spacer Fostering the Call to Public Service — Frazier Reams Fellowship Program

Spacer
They are lawyers, teachers, reporters, business executives and nurses. They live in Ohio and New York, on the East Coast, West Coast, and points in between. They each have defined civic responsibility in their own terms, yet they have a common bond. They are Bowling Green State University graduates who, as seniors, earned the prestigious Frazier Reams Public Affairs Undergraduate Fellowships.

Nearly 70 individuals make up this noteworthy group. They all have, in one way or another, followed the path of public service guided by the legendary Frazier Reams. His life was a distinguished one, dedicated to helping others—as a Congressman, prosecuting attorney, state welfare director, broadcast executive and member of the Bowling Green State University Board of Trustees (1948-57). Reams became known for his role in shutting down the Detroit mafia’s grip on the Toledo area crime scene in the 1930s. He always exhibited the essence of selfless work, explains Dr. Steven Ludd, a political science professor and a faculty member on the Frazier Reams fellowship selection committee.

After Reams’ death in 1971, his family established the fellowship to encourage BGSU students to pursue similar public service careers.
