For Dr. Patty Kubow, it’s been a long and interesting journey, but “I’m right where I want to be now,” she says. The assistant professor of educational foundations and inquiry is proof that one person can truly have an impact on large issues in the world through modeling and sharing one’s values at both the grassroots and policy levels.

Kubow has recently returned from Durban, South Africa, where she is seeing the fruition of a project that, in a remarkable way, is the culmination of both her passion for democratic education and her lifelong attraction to South Africa and Kenya.

Her groundbreaking work has been recognized at the highest levels. Kubow was selected by President George W. Bush last summer for recognition at the White House for her humanitarian work abroad, and again in January by the U.S. Agency for International Development in Washington, D.C., for her work in Eastern Europe.

For Kubow, each success has engendered even more ideas for fostering democratic education. She already has plans for disseminating the lessons created by the African teachers and for a textbook that could be widely used across Africa.
“When you first take on an issue, you do it because it’s important to you,” she says. “But once you become really involved, it takes on a much bigger, almost holistic life in which everything is working together.”
