An emphasis on educating the whole person has been a hallmark of a BGSU education since our founding in 1910. By staying true to the character and traditions of BGSU, we sustain our proud heritage while preparing students for the demands of the modern world. We actively foster an environment of inquiry, engagement and achievement which guarantees that BGSU keeps pace with society’s evolving needs. The University has always been concerned with more than graduating students who are productive people. We aspire to graduate students who are productive human beings who demonstrate wisdom, sound judgment, tolerance and respect for others.

An important component of the BGSU experience is critical thinking about values. The goal of values-based education is not to prescribe a single version of morality that students should embrace; rather, our culture teaches students to thoughtfully consider values, develop critical thinking skills and make reflective, rational decisions about difficult issues. The University continues to cultivate a warm, nurturing atmosphere while offering exceptional academic programs. A culture of respect, an emphasis on values and a celebration of diversity remain hallmarks of BGSU. We have been and remain a vibrant campus community that fosters a lifelong love of learning and a commitment to social responsibility.

These fundamental characteristics of BGSU remain strong and true. We will continue to graduate students who are critical thinkers and productive human beings. Architects, inventors, researchers, writers, sculptors, ambassadors and quiet, everyday heroes. Each with a good heart. Each with an able mind. And each with the capacity to change the world.
