Spacer Insight into Afghani Culture

Dr. Thomas E. Gouttierre ’62 is currently the dean of international studies and programs at the University of Nebraska’s Omaha campus, which houses the Center for Afghanistan Studies, the only such center in the nation. Gouttierre grew up in Maumee, Ohio, and worked in his family’s pastry shop while attending Bowling Green State University, where he graduated in 1962. BGSU awarded him an honorary degree in May 2001.

Gouttierre, who lived in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, for 10 years and served as a Peace Corps volunteer, a Fulbright Fellow and executive director of the Fulbright Foundation during his decade in Afghanistan. He also coached the Afghan national basketball team.
