National Assn Women in Construction National Association of Women in Construction scholarships
The National Association of Women in Construction scholarship applications are now available. The Dayton Chapter is offering two scholarships for the 2010-11 year for both male and female students pursuing a career in a construction-related field. Applications are available at:

Falcon men's basketball home tomorrow
The BGSU men's basketball team returns home to host Northern Illinois tomorrow (Wednesday, Feb. 10). Tip-off is 7 p.m. at venerable Anderson Arena. Ironically enough (given the weather forecast for Tuesday/Wednesday), it's WHITE OUT WEEK in recognition of White T-Shirt Day (Thursday, Feb. 11), so wear your favorite WHITE Falcon gear!

As always, BGSU students get in free with a student ID.

Brown Bag Lunch Spirituality Series this week
"Church in the Marketplace" is the first of this semester's three-part series, presented this Wednesday, Feb. 10, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. in 318 Student Union. This opening lecture and ensuing discussion is entitled "Giving" and includes the many aspects of this spiritual gift we ponder, as the season of Lent approaches. Bring your own brown bag lunch to eat during the session. Arrive and depart as your schedule permits. All faiths are welcome!

'Writing Science Lab Reports' workshop canceled
The Writing Center workshop titled "Writing Science Lab Reports," scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 11, at 2:30 p.m., has been canceled.

Please join us on Thursday, Feb. 18, at 2:30 p.m. in 400 Moseley Hall for the next workshop, "Commas, Colons, and Semi-colons Made Easy." This workshop will be facilitated by Jennifer Brown, Instructor of Scientific and Technical Communication.

Stained glass panels class starts soon!
Brighten your window with a stained glass panel. Learn to cut, foil and solder a stained glass window panel for your home or office. You may select from six designs including Celtic, Victorian, Frank Lloyd Wright, Quilt, Heart and Star. Taste of February part of Black History Month
Join us Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 6 p.m. in the Union Ballroom for the Taste of February. Taste of February is a campus-wide event sponsored by the Social Justice Task Force and the Black Student Union, that celebrates cultural awareness through entertainment. This program will focus on a century of change and continued progress at BGSU and throughout our nation's history.

Taste of February is comprised of performances ranging from singing, spoken word, art display and a keynote address by Alumnus Dr. John Scott. Food will be provided to students and staff who come to this outstanding cultural celebration, free of charge to the first 225 to register. Register now at:

Peer educator training offered
Peer educator training is planned for Feb. 21 and 28 (two consecutive Sundays) in the Student Recreation Center Conference Room. Participation in this intensive training opportunity provides students the skills and techniques necessary to become a successful peer educator before the end of the spring semester.

The role of a peer educator is to conduct activities that raise awareness of a variety of health and wellness topics. These campus leaders assist with events such as Big Playground and BGSU's Health Fair and also conduct a wide range of educational and interactive sessions in residence halls and for other campus groups.

Mary Elizabeth Keller scholarships available
The Mary Elizabeth Keller Scholarship Fund, administered by the Lorain County Retired Teachers Association, is now available. Applicants must be preparing for a career in the education field pre-K-12 or multi-age license, preference given to students who will be juniors or seniors in the 2009-10 year, and must be from Lorain County or have graduated from a high school in Lorain County. Please note that a BGSU student received this award in the 2009-10 school year!

'You CAN Have Your Cake and Eat It, Too!'

The Faculty Focus Series continues with "You CAN Have Your Cake and Eat It, Too!: Using Humanities Perspectives on Food for Service-Learning Projects" presented by Lucy Long, instructor in the School of Human Movement, Sport, and Leisure Studies.

This presentation discusses service-learning projects involving humanities concepts of food. Obviously connected to environmental sustainability and social justice, food is also central to our sense of identity, place, and meaning. Come see how students in Long's Interpreting Food class utilized service-learning projects to further their understandings of food as a cultural, social, political, and personal phenomenon.

Association of the U.S. Army scholarships available
The Major Samuel Woodfill Cincinnati Chapter announces their 2010 scholarship program for Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom soldiers' children, medically/honorably discharged OIF or OEF army veterans, spouses of fallen soldiers in the global war on terrorism, and Army soldiers who are currently serving or have served in the global war on terrorism, in that priority. Priority is also given to residents of Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio. The scholarship is available to first-time freshmen as well as returning college students. The scholarship can be used for tuition and fees, and room and board.

Clarinetist Marianne Gythfeldt at CMA Feb. 8
Clarinetist Marianne Gythfeldt will appear at Moore Musical Arts Center on Monday, Feb. 8, performing contemporary works as part of the Music at the Forefront concert series.

Her program of electroacoustic works features pieces by Luigi Ceccarelli, Mario Davidovsky, Lars Graugaard, Gerard Grisey and Eric Moe, and will also include several of her own compositions. The concert begins at 8 p.m. in Bryan Recital Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center and is free and open to the public.

Area mayors on WBGU-PBS; 'NW Ohio Journal' tonight
Legislation and issues affecting residents of northwest Ohio will be the focus of an hour-long discussion tonight (Thursday, Feb. 4) at 8 p.m. on WBGU-PBS' weekly public affairs program "NW Ohio Journal."

Unemployment, budget concerns and state taxes will be among the various legislative issues discussed, along with the economic forecast for northwest Ohio businesses and bipartisan problem-solving approaches.

Host Tom Walton leads the discussion with the newly elected mayor of Toledo, Mike Bell, Perrysburg Mayor Nelson Evans and Findlay Mayor Pete Sehnert.

Viewers are encouraged to call in during this live program with questions and comments.

"NW Ohio Journal" programs can be viewed online Friday afternoons following the program broadcast at wbgu.org/journal.

Steven O. Ludd scholarship now available
The Steven O. Ludd scholarship applications are now available in 124 of Williams Hall. This scholarship is for seniors who have a minimum of 3.5 gpa average. Candidates must be active members of the BGSU Law Society and have taken the LSAT exam and applied to law school.

Shawn Potter Cancer scholarships available
Shawn R. Potter, BGSU class of 2005, established a scholarship in 2009 shortly before passing away to honor a current BGSU student who has either battled or is currently battling cancer.

To be considered for this scholarship, you must be an undergraduate student with a 3.0 minimum GPA. Candidates must be a cancer survivor or someone currently battling cancer, provide a written confirmation of your cancer diagnosis from your oncologist, and write an essay on how cancer has shaped their life and the people around them.

In the event there are no eligible candidates who have dealt with cancer, the scholarship can be awarded to a student whose parents or siblings have battled cancer. The candidates must write an essay on how their parent's/sibling's experience influenced their life. A written confirmation of the family member's cancer diagnosis would be required.

Falcon Hockey Home vs. Michigan TOMORROW
BGSU hockey hosts Michigan tomorrow (Thursday, Feb. 4) at the BGSU Ice Arena. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. The Falcon icers are flying high looking to make it three straight wins at home, and it's our annual ORANGE OUT game, so be sure to wear your favorite ORANGE Falcon gear and help ORANGE OUT the Wolverines! Leadership Academy is a half-day, on-campus conference for BGSU students who aspire to develop their leadership and team management skills. EXPO Prep Extravaganza- Interview Simulation
In today's competitive job market, knowing what to expect and how to prepare for interviews is essential. During the interview simulation, you will have the opportunity to observe a mini-mock interview in which recruiters will ask typical interview questions, the pre-selected student volunteers will respond, and the employers will provide constructive feedback.

Upon completion of the interview, you will have access to the recruiters to ask targeted questions about the interview process. Additionally, you can provide feedback about the student's responses. This is an outstanding way to enhance your interview knowledge, so be sure to attend this powerful learning experience.

The theme of the 11th annual Black issues Conference is "Black Empowerment under the Microscope: Moving in a New Direction." The subtext of this theme will focus on challenging the black community to look at itself through a critical introspective lens in an attempt to regain the focus of utilizing success to help motivate and uplift the black community.

ACM event: Presentation on animatronics
The BGSU Association for Computing Machinery is hosting a presentation on animatronics! An animatronic doll will be showcased at this event. The presentation will be led by Dr. Michael Poor, an instructor in the CS department. Free pizza and pop will be provided!

ACM is looking for more students to participate in an organization that is interested in everything related to the ever-changing world of technology. If you are interested in joining this student organization, please attend this event to receive more information on what we do. You do not have to be in a specific major to join this organization.

The event will take place in 108 Hayes Hall at 7 p.m. Feb. 2. Everyone is welcome!

Fall protection training provided
Information will be provided on the University's Fall Protection Program, required by law. This standard is designed to prevent workers from falling off, into or through working levels and to protect employees from being struck by falling objects. Workplace hazards that require the use of a fall-protection system include, but are not limited to: walking or working on unprotected sides and edges, leading edges, unprotected holes and roofs 6 feet or more above a lower level. Other fall  hazards exist when working on scaffolds, ladders, and aerial work platforms.

The training will include an overview of fall hazards and control measures, the importance of fall-protection systems including fall-related injuries, a brief summary of the OSHA standards relating to fall protection, and an overview of BGSU's written fall-protection program.

Attend the 'Reading Effectively across Disciplines' workshop in the Writing Center
Struggling with all the reading you have to do for your classes? Join us this Thursday, Feb. 4, from 2:30-3:25 p.m. in 400 Moseley Hall for a workshop titled "Reading Effectively across Disciplines" and learn how to dissect, understand, and recall all the readings assigned by your professors--and still sleep at night.

This workshop, sponsored by the Writing Center, will be facilitated by Kate Spike, Director of the English as a Second Language Program, and is open to all BGSU community members.

Taste of February is a campuswide event, sponsored by the Social Justice Task Force and the Black Student Union, that celebrates cultural awareness through entertainment. This program will focus on a century of change and continued progress at BGSU and throughout our nation's history.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., followed by the program at 6 p.m. in the Union Ballroom.

Taste of February comprises performances ranging from singing, spoken word, art display and a keynote address by alumnus Dr. John Scott. Food will be provided to students and staff who come to this outstanding cultural celebration, free of charge to the first 225 to register.

FREE practice grad school entrance exams
The BGSU Alumni Association and American Medical Association are working with the Kaplan Test Preparation company to provide FREE practice graduate school entrance exams on Saturday, Feb. 13, at Olscamp Hall. Free sample graduate school admission tests (GRE, LSAT, MCAT, NCLEX, DAT) will be administered by the Kaplan Test Prep and the BGSU Alumni Association.

Sponsored by the BGSU Alumni Association and BGSU American Medical Student Association. All BGSU students and BGSU alumni are eligible. Priority registration is given to students affiliated with the sponsor offices.

Registration is required. You must register online by 5 p.m. Feb. 6. Test spots will be given on a first come, first served basis. Latta Scholarship applications due March 1
The Delbert L. Latta Scholarship application for fall 2010 is available online to currently enrolled BGSU students and high school seniors from the following counties: Defiance, Erie, Fulton, Henry, Ottawa, Paulding, Putnam, Sandusky, Seneca, Van Wert, Williams or Wood. A variable number of awards are presented each year; recipients receive a minimum of $2,000, in addition to the honor of being named "Latta Scholars." The application deadline is March 1.

To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must complete and return:

-Application
-A 500-1,000 word essay on some aspect of the U.S. free enterprise system
-Official transcripts (incoming freshmen should submit high school grades)
-Two letters of reference

Candidates may also be asked to participate in an interview prior to the final selection. The completed application packet must be postmarked by than March 1. Details are available at:

Laser safety training offered
Environmental Health and Safety will be offering the following training session that is open to all BGSU employees and students. This training session will have advance registration and will be conducted free of charge.

Procedures for safe operation and use of lasers have been developed in consultation with principal users of lasers on this campus, and are consistent with standards set forth by the American National Standards Institute. This training seminar will present the institutional policies and provide guidance in their implementation. Persons presently working or who intend to work in facilities that use lasers, especially those classified by the manufacturer as Class 3 or 4, must attend this meeting.
