Do You Use P2P?
Do you use peer-to-peer software such as Ares, Azureus, BitComet, BitLord, BitTornado, BitTorrent, FlashGet, Gnutella, KaZaa, LimeWire, Morpheus, Shareaza, uTorrent, Xunlei/Thunder or eDonkey? Are you aware that on Oct. 10 a technical technology will be implemented that will allow legal use of peer to peer (P2P) at BGSU while also detecting attempts to obtain copyrighted content in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA)?

This technical technology is part of a layered proactive approach to peer-to-peer and digital copyright issues at BGSU. It focuses on the resources that are in place to address issues surrounding the DMCA. The layers of resources used are awareness/education, alternatives for obtaining digital resources, and also the technical technology layer.

With the technical technology in place, when a computer is determined to be using P2P to obtain illegal copyright materials or using an evasive P2P client, a preventative technical safeguard will be implemented and the user's Web browser will be redirected to a Web site explaining the violation and preventing internet connectivity for periods of times based on previous warnings.

Further details are available at the Digital Copyright Safeguards Web site at
www.bgsu.edu/dmca-safeguards.

Please be aware of the implementation of this new technology at BGSU as of Oct. 10 and any impact it may have on how you use P2P software. Questions or requests for further information may be directed as outlined at
http://www.bgsu.edu/infosec/page55736.html.
