Learning Commons
Tutor Spotlight - Caitlin Gorman
The Learning Commons offers many useful resources to BGSU students. Located on the first floor of the Jerome Library, the LC provides drop in tutoring, individual tutoring sessions, textbook rentals, to leasing out calculators and laptops.
In addition to material resources, a knowledgeable Graduate staff is there to assist the four coordinators, secretaries and director. Caitlin Gorman is one such graduate student. Coming to BG from Lima, OH Caitlin is a second year art history student currently working on her thesis research paper, an active member of the BGSU School of Art Docent program, in addition to her assistantship at The Learning Commons.
You can count on Caitlin for a smile and her extensive knowledge about art history from ancient Rome, the Impressionist movement, to the contemporary period. She enjoys working with students and sharing her passion for history and the art of the period. Caitlin has re- inspired many overwhelmed students to have a new perspective of her favorite discipline. In addition to art history, she also is a talented study skills tutor, assisting students with note taking strategies to the benefits of time management. During the first two weeks of the spring semester, Ms. Gorman led two sessions on Study Skills for The Learning Common’s Level 1 training program. There she taught students the importance of effective time management, and note taking, teaching the audience about the Cornell system of notes and SQ3R (survey, question, read, recite, and review) two useful study skills approaches. If you need assistance with art history or study skills Caitlin is the tutor for you.
The tutor certification is a program offered by The Learning Commons to its subject and drop in tutors. This certification program is composed of a variety of face to face and online informational sessions used to better prepare the students for their tutoring responsibilities.
The Learning Commons is open evenings from 6 - 10 p.m. Sundays, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays. To learn more about the Learning Commons or to see upcoming events, visit the website or Facebook page.
