First Timers at The Learning Commons
With Matt Ferguson, Learning Commons Graduate Assistant & Tutor
Many students who visit The Learning Commons for the first time are sometimes unsure of what to expect and have many questions about how to use our various services. As a tutor, I want the students who use The Learning Commons to succeed. However, since visiting The Learning Commons can seem daunting at first, some students may be discouraged to even stop-by. Don’t be that student! You’re missing out! So with that in mind—let me ease any worries you might have about using The Learning Commons.
When you first come to The Learning Commons, stop-by the front desk. We have a rotating staff of clerical workers who will check you in and get you headed in the right direction. If you have a question about where to go or what services we provide, the front desk is the first place to go. Don’t forget the front desk! It is the first stop to academic success at The Learning Commons!
Once you are checked-in to The Learning Commons, you will probably be meeting with one of our tutors. All of our tutors go through training and some are even working on becoming certified as “highly qualified” tutors. Regardless of the subject they tutor, all of our tutors are excited and enthusiastic about their job. Be prepared to work with them—they have a method to their madness, and if you put forth the effort, chances are their tips and study strategies will get you headed in the right direction academically.
After your tutoring session, don’t forget that The Learning Commons is a great place to study and get work done. If you only stop by The Learning Commons for a weekly tutoring session, you might forget a lot of what you worked on between sessions, so visit The Learning Commons a few times a week just to study. We have study tables, desktop and laptop computers available for you to get work done in a quiet, comfortable setting. If you are having trouble being productive, you might also want to look into our academic coaching program, where our coaches can help you identify problem areas in your study habits and time management skills. We look forward to seeing you soon!
