Since 1993-94, the University Honors Program has given the Becky Hendel Award to one Honors student each year who has devoted a great deal of time and energy to "making a difference in the world."
The award is given by Greg and Sherry Hendel. Their only daughter, Becky, a BG Honors student, died at the age of 19.
They want Becky's memory to live on and, in doing so, support those who do volunteer service/enrichment work as Becky did. Consequently, they set up this award through the Honors Program to "recognize and encourage a student who, while a participant in the Honors Program at the University, has unselfishly given of him or herself in such a way as to have benefited others in the community with little fanfare or recognition other than taking the opportunity to truly help another or others.
Except for participation in the Honors Program at BGSU, neither academic achievement nor holding any formal leadership roles in an activity or group is necessary as a criterion for selection. Preference is given to a rising junior or senior. The recipient will receive a cash award of $200.
It is important to the Hendels that the volunteer service be truly voluntary; that is, it excludes any service that is required by any major or organization. It is to be volunteerism from the heart. And the recipient should be someone who does not "toot his/her own horn."
Applications will be sent to Honors students and faculty in March.
