Crayfish Ethogram Codes


-2 = tail-flipping away from opponent or fast retreat
-1 = Retreat = slowly backing away from opponent
0 = Ignorance = completely ignoring opponent, No threat display no response
1 = Approach without a threat display
2 = Approach with threat Display = Antennal whipping, meral spread, Raised posture
3 = Initial Claw Use = Boxing, pushing or touching with claws, claws are closed
4 = Active Claw Use = Grabbing opponent with claws, holding other crayfish with claws
5 = Unrestrained Fighting = trying to rip opponent’s claws / body parts off

List of Common Agonistic Behaviors

TF = Tail-flip
R = retreat by walking / backing away from opponent
AB = approach opponent from behind
TTF = try to flip other crayfish
FO = flipped over on back
UO = underneath opponent
OO= on top of opponent
AW = antennal whipping
TD = threat display
MP = holding opponent in mating position
AP = while in MP trying to pull down opponent’s abdomen
