Catheterization Protocol
1. Set up catheter area.
- cut catheters to 8mm (cut extra you will need them!)
- check crucifix for rubberband wear
- make sure there is enough epoxy and superglue
- make sure holding containers are ready (have ~ 1cm of water in bottom)
- prepare paper towels to place over gills of crayfish (folded over and over until about 1 cm wide)
2. Get crayfish from pots, note pot number and write on log sheet
3. Place crayfish in crucifix claws first, then abdomen, and finally mouth parts. Cover gills with paper towels.
4. Band the chelae of the crayfish using the small yellow rubberbands.
5. Mix epoxy for twenty seconds, spread on the outside of catheter edges.
6. Place catheter over right nephropore and hold in place for about 30 seconds. Glue should run down catheter and seal onto carapace.
7. Repeat above for left catheter.
8. Allow catheters to dry for 5-10 minutes with crayfish in crucifix.
9. With a sharp stick, place extra epoxy around the bottom rim of the catheter, attaching it to the carapace.
10. Allow catheters to dry for 5-10 minutes with crayfish in crucifix
11. Remove crayfish from crucifix and place in individual holding bins for one hour so that epoxy completely cures.
12. When finished, make sure all epoxy equipment is disposed of and area is cleaned.
13. Place crayfish back into pot and back into flow through tank after 1 hour has passed.
14. Allow epoxy to completely harden (in the pots) for 24 hours.
