Empowerment lies at the core of my teaching philosophy, and my primary goal is to promote intellectual confidence in students. Every
student has the potential to be an articulate writer, so I position myself as a reader and guide to help students develop
that potential. I stress that the student-writer contribute her or his unique voice to the academic community, becoming a creator of knowledge. I don’t emphasize “rules” or enforce rigid guidelines, but I do teach students about the conventions of academic writing, with a focus on analyzing each unique writing situation. Academic writing doesn’t need to be stale or stiff; I challenge students to write passionately, creatively, analytically,
and persuasively. I provide strategies, practice, examples, and constructive feedback; the students deliver the rest.
