By their very nature writing courses require the explanation and comparison of students’ knowledge and ideals. In addition,
students must learn to focus on developing good writing habits such as prewriting and continual outlining. Together, we experiment
with different rhetorical strategies, with stress on finding the methods that work best for each individual. The basics of
the classroom aside, composition offers a chance to help students garner the most from their university careers. My approach
incorporates thematic learning and creative thinking tools to encourage the broadening of student values. I encourage them
to be alert to their surroundings and the materials they come into contact with and to muse over similarities that may help
shape a schema of the world. In this way, they come to believe that their voices are important and have the potential to affect
others profoundly, just as they are affected. Ultimately, with the writing process comes a call for thoughtful responses in
all they do throughout their lives.
