In addition to the many GSW course sections offered each semester, the program also offers a number of course variants which
have been assigned for specific populations of students.
English 110W These sections are for non-native speakers of English only and include the same kinds of assignments other 110 students receive.
However, there is additional emphasis on ESL concerns, such as the development of skills in sentence structure, edited American
English usage, mechanics, and paragraph construction.
English 110X, 111X, and 112X Fifteen to twenty-five GSW course sections are taught in computer labs on campus each semester. As in other composition classes,
the emphasis in computer-mediated sections is on writing as a process of personal discovery and public presentation. Students
are encouraged to understand that the computer provides the writer with the optimum composing environment for making appropriate
choices and changes with ease. The computer-mediated course also instructs students in traditional "hard-copy" revision and
editing techniques. The benefit of this combined practice is the development of efficient, effective, and flexible writing
processes for each student.
English 110R, 111R, and 112R GSW instructors teach these sections in the Chapman Learning Community at Kohl Hall. The Chapman Learning Community is a residential community in which students and faculty work especially close
with one another and students gain the experience of taking a number of classes with one another.
English 111C and 112C These sections are taught by GSW instructors assigned to the Partners in Context and Community (PCC) Learning Community. The writing skills taught are the same as in other GSW classes, but because PCC students are education
majors, their writing assignments are based upon educational themes. Furthermore, students are required to engage in service
learning projects related to teaching.
English 111A and 112A These sections are taught by GSW instructors assigned to teach in the Arts Village Residential Learning Community. The writing skills taught are the same as in other GSW classes, but assignments and activities are designed to appeal to
students who are especially interested in the arts.
English 112H Incoming students accepted into the University Honors Program and eligible to enroll in English 112 are invited to enroll in these sections, created to challenge students to develop their
critical thinking and writing skills in special ways. To teach English 112H, instructors must submit an English 112H course
proposal for approval by the GSW Director and the Honors Program Director.
