Completing the Paperwork In completing the formal application for the English 112 Exemption Process, the applicant must choose either simple exemption
or credit-by-exam. Credit-by-Exam is available only to students who have not previously enrolled in 112 or have not taken/
transferred credit for an English course above the 112 level by the time the exemption is completed. BGSU’s current charge
for credit-by-exam is $80, for which students who pass the exemption procedure receive three hours of credit and an “S” for
the course. Simple exemption, the most popular option, costs nothing and earns no credit; it merely satisfies BGSU’s English
112 requirement.
Important Note to Students If at all possible, do not postpone fulfillment of BGSU’s English 112 requirement until the senior year. Some students seeking
exemption are not invited to participate in the exemption process, some students invited to participate in the process do
not successfully complete it, and the exemption process takes time. Graduation could be delayed by an unfulfilled English
112 requirement, and the University may add credit hours to graduation requirements if a student completes English 112 (or
exemption) after attaining junior or senior standing. A student must complete the steps of the 112 Exemption Process with
the GSW Assistant Director and live up to the agreed-upon obligations if a student is to receive an exemption.
