Step 2: Satisfying the Research Paper Requirement
Students who successfully complete Step 1 have two options for completing Step 2 of the Exemption Process.
OPTION A: In addition to successfully completing Part #1, the Exemption Essay, the student must also satisfy a Research Paper Requirement.
The research paper itself should demonstrate the following:
- An approved topic focus
- An argument for a case or point of view
- Evidence as support
- Synthesis of an appropriate number of sources
- Full documentation
- Accurate formatting
- 6 to 8 pages in length
OPTION B: Since 1996-97, the General Studies Writing Program has been developing and employing a portfolio Exemption Option for students
who have not fulfilled the English 112 graduation requirement but who have already completed a significant amount of “mature-practitioner”
writing. In these cases, the portfolio must contain several “pieces” of writing, depending upon length and complexity, usually
four to eight pieces. All writing must also be verifiable as to authorship/co-authorship by the student. An attached context-statement
for each portfolio piece (audience, purpose, task-stipulations, etc.) is recommended.
