In English 112 (Varieties of Writing), the only academic class required of all students at BGSU, students develop writing and researching skills needed throughout
their academic careers. Sometimes, students master these skills without having taken English 112 or transferring its equivalent
from another institution. Students with superior analytical writing skills and clear command of synthesis, research, and documentation
methods may be suitable candidates for English 112 exemption.
A student seeking exemption (or, in specific circumstances, credit by exam) must meet with the Assistant Director of General Studies Writing to:
- Discuss reason(s) for seeking exemption, previous coursework, level of preparedness in synthesis writing, academic standing,
transfer credit history, etc.
- Learn about the exemption procedure, the nature of the Exemption Essay, and the research paper requirement.
- If appropriate, complete an Application for Exemption from English 112 form. At this point, the Assistant Director will give
the student guidelines for producing an Exemption Essay.
During this meeting, the Assistant Director will determine whether or not the student is eligible to begin the two-step exemption
process.
