Tent Requirements for Outdoor Events
BGSU groups and organizations sometimes set up tents as part of their events. We hope that the following information will help these organizations have an enjoyable and safe event.
- The Ohio Building Code requires that tents and membrane structures having an area in excess of 200 square feet, and canopies in excess of 400 square feet shall not be erected, operated or maintained for any purpose without first obtaining a permit and approval from the Division of Industrial Compliance.
- The Ohio Fire Code does not allow gasoline, gas, charcoal, or other cooking device or any other unapproved open flame device inside or located within 20 feet of the tent or air-supported structures. The Ohio Fire Code allows exceptions if prior approval is obtained from the fire official (State Fire Marshall's Office at 614-752-8200).
- Straw, corn shocks, and other dry vegetation must be a minimum of 20 feet away from any tent, membrane, or air-supported structure.
- Motor vehicles, portable generators and other appliances with internal combustion engines must be a minimum of 25 feet away from any tent, membrane or air-supported structure.
- The Ohio Fire Code requires all tents and air-supported structures to have at least one portable fire extinguisher within minimum 4-A rating, or two portable extinguishers with a minimum 2-A rating each. A free loan of fire extinguishers during events are available for University departments and University-related organizations.
