Tent Requirements for Outdoor Events
BGSU groups and organizations sometimes set up tents as part of their events. We hope that the following information will help these organizations have an enjoyable and safe event.
The Ohio Fire Code requires:
- A permit and approval from the State Fire Marshal's Office for tents and membrane structures with an area in excess of 200 square feet, and canopies in excess of 400 square feet is required. Permits are processed by the Ohio Department of Commerce, Code Enforcement (614-752-8200).
- Any gas, charcoal, or other open flame or food preparation devices be kept a minimum of 20 feet away from any tent or air-supported structures. The Ohio Fire Code will sometimes allow exceptions if prior approval is obtained from the State Fire Marshal's Office (614-752-8200).
- Any straw, hay, corn shocks, dry vegetation and other similar combustible materials be kept a minimum of 20 feet away from the tent or air-supported structure.
- Any motor vehicles, portable generators and other appliances with internal combustion engines that emit high levels of carbon monoxide be kept a minimum of 25 feet away from any tent or air-supported structure.
