Northwest Ohio Working to Improve College Access Now (NOW I CAN)
NOW I CAN

The NOW I CAN initiative has been developed to provide college awareness and access resources to students in Wood County, and in East Toledo as an extension of an existing GEAR UP relationship. Collaborative partners have been identified, including the East Toledo Family Center, Bowling Green State University, area school administrators and guidance counselors and a variety of community leadership. The first year will focus on establishing the program in the community and developing resources and relationships to make post-secondary education or training a reasonable option and expectation for students in these areas.

Goals

1. To assist students and their families become more aware of the benefits of pursuing some kind of education or training beyond high school.

2. To provide students and their families with information and resources about post-secondary education or training, such as financial aid, college selection, career planning, etc.

3. To provide assistance with ACT test preparation.

4. To establish relationships in the community that will provide volunteer assistance that will supplement and complement the college awareness and access initiatives.

5. To establish follow up channels for students who progress to some post-secondary education or training to assess program effectiveness. Staff and Volunteers

NOW I CAN currently has a Director who will coordinate all organizational and program matters, including contact with the students, schools, community and other stakeholders.

NOW I CAN will recruit volunteers to collaborate on programs, participate in the schools with outreach efforts, and to assist with administrative tasks.

NOW I CAN will seek individuals who will serve as mentors to provide one-on-one support for students to help insure a successful transition from high school to college or other training. Bowling Green State University will serve as the fiscal agent for the grant through the Center for Innovative and Transformative Education (CITE), although the university will not receive any of the actual grant funds.
