Glossary of Terms

Abilene Abilene is an Internet2 backbone network. Internet2 and Abilene are the two principal projects of UCAID.
bandwidth The amount of data that can be transmitted over a network in a fixed amount of time. Bandwidth is the fundamental networking parameter, and is usually measured in kilobits, megabits or gigabits per second (kbps, Mbps, or Gbps).
Dark Fiber Initiative The Third Frontier Network (previously known as the Ohio Dark Fiber Initiative) is being created to provide advanced telecommunications services to support higher education and research in the state of Ohio. The goal of this project is to create a premier network that will enhance research, education, and economic development that will help expand Ohio¹s role and reputation in networking technology.
delay How long it takes a packet to travel from its source to its destination. Also called latency.
gigaPop Gigabit point of presence - a regional internetworking aggregation point.
H.323 A set of ITU standards for Internet videoconferencing and VoIP.
Internet2 A university-led effort to develop advanced network applications and the network technologies needed to support them. The 200+ U.S. universities that lead the project work closely with partners in industry and government, and with advanced networks around the world. "Internet2" is a registered trademark.
iPv6 Internet Protocol version 6 - The next version of the Internet Protocol. The current version is IPv4; IPv5 was an experimental real-time streaming protocol. IPv6 offers several improvements over IPv4, including a vastly larger address space.
latency How long it takes a packet to travel from its source to its destination. Also called delay.
middleware Roughly, a layer of software between the network and the applications; middleware is also known as "glue". Middleware is notoriously hard to define. One of the most popular definitions is "the intersection of what network designers and application developers each do not want to do."
multicast A set of technologies that make efficient one-to-many and many-to-many real-time communication possible on the network.
NGI Next Generation Internet - A now-concluded Federal program focused on developing advanced applications and networking capabilities needed by US Goernment agencies such as NASA and the DOE.
OARnet Ohio Acadmic Resources Network
OC-3 Short for Optical Carrier, used to specify the speed of fiber optic networks conforming to the SONET standard. An OC-3 = 155.52 Mbps.
packet A message transmitted over a network. Large chunks of information are broken up into packets before they are sent across the Internet.
QoS Quality of Service - a network's ability to give different treatment to traffic from different users or applications. Today's Internet does not offer QoS. QoS is specified in terms of one or more of the following parameters: bandwidth, delay, jitter, and loss.
SONET Short for Synchronous Optical Network, a standard for connecting fiber-optic transmission systems.
Third Frontier Network The Third Frontier Network (previously known as the Ohio Dark Fiber Initiative) is being created to provide advanced telecommunications services to support higher education and research in the state of Ohio. The goal of this project is to create a premier network that will enhance research, education, and economic development that will help expand Ohio¹s role and reputation in networking technology.
UCAID University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development - The nonprofit corporation that oversees the Internet2 and Abilene projects.
