Committee Members Present:
Tom Andrews, Heinze Buhlman, Bruce Edwards, Cindy Fuller, Bill Gerwin, Andy Layden, Bruce Petryshak, Sub Ramakrishnan, Mike Smith, Bob Vincent

The meeting opened by welcoming all in attendance and by reviewing and approving the minutes of the March 27 meeting. Chair Comer Duncan will be on sabbatical during the upcoming year. His involvement with the steering committee will continue and assistance will be received from Bruce Edwards and Sub Ramakrishnan who were welcomed as co-chairs.

Bruce Edwards and Sub Ramakrishnan reported on their attendance at the Spring 2003 Internet2 Member Meeting held April 9-11 in Arlington, VA. The Internet2 forum held on April 23 at BGSU was reviewed.

Discussion followed regarding how to take advantage of resources available and how to get faculty excited about possibilities. Discussion topics included:

• web site for project examples
  
• sharing of information about reasons for I2 projects
  
• collaborations with businesses within Ohio to take advantage of Third Frontier
  
• state and local agencies making use of I2 for access to data/information - will other uses overtax the system?
  
• creation of a user database - both for BGSU and other universities
  
• development of user communities to promote, excite, and interest others
  

During her visit for the I2 forum Linda Roos of OARnet summed it up as we have a great setup to move forward, now is the time to move.

Mike Smith reported that OARnet is working on Beacon software to track latency. The Netflow product is also being used to track how bandwidth is being used.

Bruce Edwards reported that he has contacted Music, Theatre, and Art to talk about what Internet2 can do for their areas. Generation of other ideas to publicize:

• Bob Vincent to write several paragraphs about the use of I2 in his projects and Mike Smith to write several paragraphs about what the network can do - put these together and use as publicity
• add a banner on the website to state that we are an I2 university and give examples
• group chairs and directors together who can share information about projects
• develop an I2 demo for use in presenting to departments/groups - Bruce Edwards, Tom Andrews, and Sub Ramakrishnan will work on putting this together
• development of an I2 "swat team" - this group would come together and identify any potential problems, have contact with network team in advance and contact with network personnel at other end
• document of "what to do if I want to do an I2 project" listing steps or sequence of things to do
• e-mail questions referred to a standard location - this will be the cio@bgnet e-mail address, Cindy Fuller will continue to monitor
