Internet2 Steering Committee Thursday, March 27, 2003 12:00 p.m. - Bring your own brown bag lunch 307 Bowen Thompson Student Union
Committee Members Present: Tom Andrews, Comer Duncan, Bruce Edwards, Cindy Fuller, Bill Gerwin, Andy Layden, Bruce Petryshak, Sub Ramakrishnan, Mike
Smith, Song Ton
Comer Duncan welcomed all to the meeting and asked Bruce Petryshak for an update on the Dark Fiber project. Bruce shared with
the group that the fees for the Dark Fiber project are currently being discussed and he would be attending a meeting the following
day to continue the work on this project. Bruce also took the opportunity to share with the group the charge to develop guidelines
and collaborative efforts for the growth of Internet2 at BGSU. The steering committee consists of the type of researchers
who will make use of Internet2 and is the group that needs to build and drive development and usage.
Mike Smith then provided details about the current configuration of the network.
- BGSU is currently leasing a fractional OC-3 with 155 Mb total bandwidth, currently we are leasing 96 Mb
- Internet1 capability is up to 51Mb of available bandwidth
- Internet2 capability is up to 45 Mb of available bandwidth
- 50Mb is still available, we do not lease because we are not hitting capacity on current network; also would need to make changes
to firewall and packet shaping currently take place
- current firewall and packet shaping capacity is 100Mb
- Mike will send to the steering committee the url to see current bandwidth utilization - www.bgsu.edu/offices/its/network/bandwith.html
- exploring with OARnet possibilities to separate Internet1 and Internet2 traffic so the Internet2 traffic would not need to
go through packet shaping, will be a cost involved to have this happen
- firewall is needed to avoid attacks to the network
- packet shaping is needed to avoid peer to peer file sharing taking all bandwidth available
- currently anyone on campus can use Internet2
- our traffic is handed off to OARnet and they route to others based on IP address, IP address is what determines of traffic
is through Internet1 or Internet2 (if the address sent to is Internet2 capable)
- when connecting with Firelands, OC-3 is used
- Mike and his staff are available technical resources for anyone who may need assistance in using Internet2 effectively
Bruce Petryshak announced that Spring 2003 Internet2 Member Meeting will be taking place in Arlington VA on April 9-11. The
CIO office would be able to fund two attendees to the conference. Anyone interested should contact his office.
The Internet2 forum will be held on April 23 at BG. Linda Roos of OARnet will be speaking and a panel will be available to
answer questions.
The meeting adjourned with plans for the April 23 forum to be the next meeting for the group.
