Internet2 Steering Committee
Wednesday, February 19, 2003
307 Bowen Thompson Student Union

Committee Members Present:
Bruce Petryshak, Tom Andrews, Heinz Bulmahn, Comer Duncan, Bruce Edwards, Cindy Fuller, Bill Gerwin, Tong Sun, Bob Vincent

Bruce Petryshak, CIO welcomed the committee members present. Comer Duncan was introduced as the chair of the committee and as the primary investigator of the University's Internet 2 grant. Committee members introduced themselves and meeting agendas were distributed. Box lunches were available during the meeting.

As an introduction, the charge given to the BGSU Internet 2 Steering Committee as an advisory group to the CIO was reviewed:

  • Facilitate communications regarding Internet 2 to the University community
  • Help identify Internet 2 related funding opportunities
  • The development of an Internet 2 web site (with the assistance of ITS)
  • Participate in extending partnerships between BGSU faculty and faculty at other Internet 2 organizations
  • Work with academic units to help identify potential research initiatives and possible collaborative efforts
  • Monitor and report on the progress of BGSU Internet 2 projects to the CIO.
  • Generate an annual report on the status of Internet 2 and present to the CIO.
  • Help promote BGSU Internet 2 research activities, both internal and external to the University.
  • Support promotional activities such as an Internet 2 day.

(these were originally distributed to committee members in letter dated 5/7/2002 serving as invitation to Internet 2 Steering Committee)

Points of discussion:

Facts about Internet 2

  • currently over 200 universities connected to Internet 2
  • not a separate network - it is an Aberline backbone network
  • if Internet 2 is able to connect to another Internet 2 site, connection will be made, user does not need to do anything special to obtain connection
  • BGSU is currently routing traffic to other Internet 2 sites

Encourage use of Internet 2 at BGSU by:

  • heightened use of collaborations to take advantage of Internet 2 - Examples:

dance performances - dancers coast to coast performing simultaneously computer science - network reaction study arts - explore remote teaching from places such as Paris psychology - study impact of learning
  • look at uses of Internet 2 beyond the moving of bulk data
  • committee members sharing information and facilitating use of Internet 2
  • sponsoring an Internet 2 Day - 1/2 day here - invite a state or national speaker, target date of April 2003, possibly invite Linda Roos from OARNet to speak
  • looking at how Internet 2 is currently being used at BGSU and look at what is being done at other colleges and universities
  • looking at Internet 2 user's groups and national user's groups
  • using collaborative projects to attract dollars for funding that will be more readily available if projects are collaborative - possible large scale users of Internet 2 will be art, theatre, music and remote sensing

Capabilities/Configuration of Internet 2

  • BGSU currently has a network bandwidth of 100 megabit to the outside world

firewall and packet shaping determines how bandwidth is used
currently Internet 1 capped at 51 megabit of bandwidth
currently Internet 2 capped at 45 megabit of bandwidth
  • Internal network problems encountered in using Internet 2 should be directed to Bill Gerwin, problems will be investigated and diagnosed on a case-by-case basis.
  • Also possible to use the resources of the OARNet engineers to resolve problems
  • Internet 2 is a research network, some difficulties will be encountered - use available resources to resolve

There was a recommendation to use a BLOG (web log use) as a discussion resource for this committee. Cindy Fuller working from CIO's office available to help with communications.

Bruce Petryshak shared information with the committee about Governor Taft's Third Frontier Project. This project includes the Third Frontier Network, also known as the Dark Fiber Initiative. The Third Frontier Network is being created to provide advanced telecommunications services to support higher education and research in the state of Ohio. BGSU will be a POP (point of presence) for this project. Internet 2 is used as preparation for this project.

The meeting adjourned and a date, time, and location for the next meeting will be communicated via e-mail.
