Query allows users to create and run reports against the FMS or CSS database with these queries being as simple or as complex as needed. Queries can be created for a one-time use or they may be created and saved for future repeated use. Query will be the PeopleSoft version of Focus reports in SIS.
Query users will benefit from having a basic understanding of the data that the query will be based upon (such as, in what record the data is stored), and the relationships of other records within the database.
Query users will find there are two levels of Query:
- Query Viewer: Provides ‘read-only’ access to predefined queries. Users with Query Viewer access can search, run, print, and download query data.
- Query Manager: Allows users to create new queries, modify existing queries, and schedule queries to run at a later date. Users should have experience in writing Focus (FOCEXEC) reports in order to benefit from this level of training.
| This web page focuses on users who will have Query Viewer Access. The following classes are associated with Query Viewer Access: Fundamentals of Database Structure (online class) Query Viewer (online class) Query Runner (hands-on class) |
Class Descriptions
Fundamentals of Database Structure (online class)
Users completing this class will learn the definitions of different types of software as well receiving an introduction to the concept of a database management system (DBMS) and relational database management system (RDBMS). This training class will also cover identification of the elements of a table or record using PeopleSoft terminology.
This is an online course accessible via MyBGSU. Campus Solutions (CSS) users are required to have successfully completed CSS 110-140 prior to enrollment in this class. Documentation for online classes:
Query Viewer (online class)
This class covers two lessons pertaining to Query Viewer. Lesson One is entitled View a Query and it guides users through the Basic Search process. This process is covered through to viewing the query to HTML and saving the query to "Favorites". Lesson Two is entitled View a Query Using Prompts and it guides users through the process of using Advanced searching along with running the query results to Excel.
This is an online UPK class accessible via MyBGSU. The UPK class may be accessed on a Windows machine using Internet Explorer 6.0 / 7.0 or Firefox 2.0 or on a Macintosh machine using Firefox 2.0. Through a variety of hands-on exercises users will participate in learning the specifics of downloading query results into Excel. Included will be exercises on saving public queries to private folders, working with prompts (variable parameters or run controls), as well as exercises on how to manipulate data in Excel. Excel exercise will include how to sort fields & rows, use of various formulas, and some processes for filtering results (i.e., unique values, duplicate rows, and multiple criteria). This class is offered in a training environment with hands-on participation by attendees. The sessions will be scheduled for a four hour setting in either a morning or afternoon timeframe. Attendees will be required to have completed the Fundamentals of Database Structure and Query Viewer online class prior to attending Query Runner. Users are encouraged to complete this class in conjunction with obtaining Query Viewer Access.
Query Runner session availability and sign up is available at: https://intranet.bgsu.edu/pstrain/.
Please Note: Query Runner (hand-on class) cancellation policy - It will be required that five or more participants be registered by 48 hours prior to the class time.
