Spacer Wireless Network Strategic Plan Budget Year 2004/2005 Spacer

In budget year 2004/2005,continued efforts should be made to provide wireless network coverage to buildings that house large classrooms, coverage should be established in buildings where people congregate, and additional outdoor zones should be created.

Wireless coverage for buildings with large classrooms:

  • The Math Science building
  • East Hall
  • South Hall (lecture halls 105 & 111)
  • West Hall (lecture hall 121)
  • Moseley Hall (lecture hall 200) has a large lecture hall that could benefit from wireless coverage. Since the building is in line to be renovated, it is not recommended that the whole building be fitted with wireless coverage.

Wireless coverage for buildings with high traffic areas:

  • The first floor of the Administration building
  • McFall Center

Coverage for outdoor areas:

  • An outdoor wireless access zone that covers the area from the Administration building to University Hall should be established.
  • An outdoor wireless access zone that covers the area from the Jerome Library to Moseley Hall should be established.

Policies, Procedures, and Standards:

  • ITS plans to use 802.11g as its standard. During this budget year, ITS must begin replacing access points that are exclusively 802.11b with access points that can be equpped for either 802.11b or g.
  • Wireless encrypted connections must be available so that users of the wireless network can conduct secure sessions. This is essential so that the University's electronic business can be processed on the wireless network without the danger for information theft.

Marketing the Wireless Network:

  • The deployment of a Wireless Lab/Cyber Cafe should be considered. If a laptop program expands wireless laptop ownership, areas should be made available for their utilization in a comfortable environment. The availabiity of these environments should provide additional incentive for people to be mobile with their computing.
  • Faculty and Academic units should be encouraged to utilize wireless access in the classroom. This can be accomplished by promoting the use of classrooms that are established with wireless connectivity, training the faculty to utilize the technology in the classroom, and targeting the classes that will take advantage of the technology.
