Additional Security Being Added to BGSU email
The month of August introduced three new worms into the virus family: LovSan(MSBlaster), Nachi and Sobig.F. Support staff
from numerous departments on campus worked to detect and fix around 1,000 infected systems and to apply software patches to
vulnerable systems.
Changes are underway to add an additional layer of security to the BGSU email system to help prevent the rapid spread of viruses
whe new viruses appear before anti-virus updates are available from the vendors. Currently, identified email attachment types
are being blocked by BGSU as a measure of stopping worms and viruses that are frequently exploited via email attachments.
CIO-Alerts and CIO-Inform email messages have been established as a means of rapidly sending mass notification to everyone.
Changes are also underway to improve large scale incident response, in the event of faster and increasingly polymorphic attacks
in the future.
Security a community takes a community effort. Further improvements beyond those underway require everyone's commitment to
protecting the information and technology assets at BGSU. The Security Wisdom document at www.bgsu.edu/downloads/cio/file11413.pdf provides some basic advice for protecting yourself and others from viruses or worms.
