Whole Disk Encryption Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  What is encryption?
A: Encryption is the process of encoding data so that it cannot be read without the proper decryption.  This prevents unauthorized users from using information that does not belong to them.

Q:  What is Whole Disk Encryption?
A:  Whole Disk Encryption is the process of encrypting the entire contents of a media.

Q:  Why is BGSU doing this?
A:  Almost every member of the BGSU community has data that must be protected.  The CELO project is a multi-pronged approach to add layers of protection against data loss and compromises.

Q:  What product is being used for whole disk encryption?
A:  PGP Corporation has been chosen as our software provider for this functionality.  They were selected through the RFP process.  The PGP suite of software allows not only Whole Disk Encryption, but also virtual disk partitions, zip file encryption, instant message encryption, and many other features that we will evaluate and deploy as necessary.

Q:  Will I still be easily able to access information on my disk with whole disk encryption?
A:  Other than logging into your system at boot time, you will not notice any difference in your day to day operation.  After supplying the log in information, your system is decrypted and your data is readable just as it would be without the software.  Therefore, it is essential that you continue to use best practices in securing your data.

Q:  With whole disk encryption, is my data safe and secure at all times?
A:  No.  It is protected while the system is powered off.

Q:  Will this slow down the performance of my device?
A:  It is unlikely you will notice any performance decreases, as the software requires very little resources.

Q:  How long will it take to initially encrypt my hard drive?
A:  You should expect 2 to 3 hours to initially encrypt your hard drive.  The software will run in the background so you may continue to use your system.  You will notice performance decreases while the initial encryption is running.

Q: What if I forget my password?
A:  The TSC will have the ability to assist you in this case.

Q:  What else can I do to keep information secure?
A:  There are many practices that you can follow to provide more security.  Please see www.bgsu.edu/infosec for guidelines and information.

Q:  What are the other phases of CELO?
A:  PGP provides additional modules that will be implemented after Whole Disk Encryption.  Some potential modules are Virtual Disk Encryption, Instant Messaging Encryption, Email Encryption and others.  Each module will be evaluated and analyzed to determine which ones will work best for the BGSU community.
