Tuition Increase FAQ's

Tuition Increase FAQ's

How much is the tuition and general fee increase?

The BGSU Board of Trustees approved a 3.49% increase in tuition and the general fee for the Bowling Green campus and a 3.5% increase in tuition and the general fee for BGSU Firelands.

Who is affected by the tuition and general fee increase? How much more will students pay?

The tuition and general fee increase affects all Bowling Green campus and BGSU Firelands full-time undergraduate students taking a course load of 12-18 hours. They can expect to pay about $175 more in tuition and fees per semester.

When will the changes go into effect?

The increase will go into effect for the fall 2012 semester and will appear on students’ eBill to be issued July 5.

Why are tuition increases necessary?

The increase is primarily needed to offset the loss of state funding for the University. State funding for Ohio’s public colleges and universities has decreased dramatically over the past several years. Since 2010 BGSU’s support from the state has decreased by more than $22 million. This coming academic year, we anticipate a 4% decrease, amounting to another $2.8 million in lost support.

What is BGSU doing to contain costs?

BGSU is committed to keeping higher education within reach without sacrificing quality. We are aggressively cutting costs wherever possible and continually look for more efficient ways to operate. We have successfully kept meal plan rates and parking fees the same for the coming year, for example, and have kept room rate increases to a minimum.

The budget the trustees just approved is actually less than it was in 2009, while we are serving more than 1,000 additional students.

We also are aggressively working to develop new revenue streams and raise private funds.

Is there financial aid available to help me?

Scholarship opportunities are posted online through the searchable scholarship guide. For more information on financial aid, visit http://sfa.bgsu.edu.

We also offer free financial education through Student Money Management Services

What type of payment options are available to me?

Bowling Green State University offers an installment payment plan to help students and their families manage their charges. Students may enroll in the Installment Payment Plan by logging on to MyBGSU Bursar Services Enroll in Payment Plan.

How do BGSU’s costs compare to Ohio’s other colleges and universities?

If you look at our total cost of attendance – tuition, fees, room and board – we are in the bottom half of all large, Ohio four-year schools.
