Intercollegiate Committee on Athletics
Proposed as per February 12, 1986, ICA Committee Meeting
Purpose
To advise the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics on matters involving the varsity intercollegiate athletics program of Bowling Green State University, and to monitor and promote varsity intercollegiate athletic competition, in approved athletics association sports, as an integral and constructive part of the educational, student life, and public service functions of the University.
Functions
1. To advise the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics on issues which:
(a) affect the academic and personal welfare of student athletes;
(b) involve budgetary matters;
(c) affect future development and enhancement ("long-range planning") of varsity intercollegiate athletics at Bowling Green State University; or
(d) involve campus and community perceptions of the student-athlete, the University's varsity intercollegiate athletics program, and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
2. To study issues, review materials, and make recommendation(s) to the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics regarding:
(a) policies pertaining to the conduct of intercollegiate athletics, including recommendations concerning the formulation, modification, and implementation of such policies;
(b) institutional policies and standards (current or proposed) which may have impact upon student-athletes as a group, or upon the varsity intercollegiate athletics program of BGSU;
(c) athletic facilities and athletic facility use; or
(d) such other matters as the Athletic Director may refer to the Committee for recommendation, or may be identified by the Committee as matters upon which the Committee wishes to offer recommendation.
3. To participate in staff searches in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics as deemed appropriate by the Athletic Director (including searches for head coaches, administrative personnel, and such others as may be designated by the Athletic Director).
4. To receive on behalf of (and about) Bowling Green State University, information regarding student-athletes and athletic programs; and to recommend any appropriate institutional response. (This provision will ordinarily lead to a Committee recommendation addressed to the Athletic Director, NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative, Registrar, or President.) Thus informed, the Committee may serve as a "public liaison" within and external to the University.
5. It shall be the duty of the Intercollegiate Committee on Athletics to review annually the status of academic standards of athletes, initiate any studies deemed necessary and make recommendations to the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics or the President.
Membership
(a) Seven elected faculty members eligible for election to the faculty Senate;
(b) One faculty member in his/her first four years at BGSU, appointed by the Committee (on committee for a one-year term);
(c) One undergraduate student appointed annually by the Student Athletic Advisory Committee;
(d) One graduate student appointed annually by the Graduate Student Senate.
Ex Officio
(a) Associate Vice President of Student Affairs;
(b) Director of Intercollegiate Athletics;
(c) Director, School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation;
(d) NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative;
(e) University Registrar.
Balance of Representation
If minorities and women are inadequately represented, the President may use his powers of appointment to add one or two full-time faculty members to balance the representation.
