Student Achievement Assessment Committee
Student Health Service
Introduction:
The assessment of learning outcomes, with respect to the Student Health Service (SHS), carries broad connotations. At first glance, most health care providers believe that it would be difficult to ascertain what learning has occurred as a result of various activities of the SHS. However, if one considers a disease prevention model, including primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention, the activities of the SHS are, naturally, of vital importance.
The Wellness Connection coordinates our primary prevention efforts through health education programs, whereas the clinical aspect of the SHS provides secondary and tertiary prevention. The role of the health educator, nurse, nurse practitioner, and physician is that of educator. In fact the word “doctor” is derived from Latin and means teacher. As such, we assert that positive patient outcomes, as a result of patient education, are indeed a measure of learning outcomes. To a certain extent, these can be assessed via patient satisfaction surveys.
Accordingly, the results of our most recent student satisfaction survey are attached. We are particularly proud to report that 82% of the students surveyed reported that by coming to the Student Health Service, it helped keep them in classes and/or on campus. When this is noted in light of the over 30,000 student contacts with the SHS per year, our impact on campus engagement is notable.
Structure of Assessment Activities in the Student Health Service:
The Director of the Student Health Service has charged a newly reorganized Quality Improvement / Risk Management (QI/RM) Committee with oversight of all assessment activities in the SHS. The QI/RM committee has multiple functions of which assessment is but one. Attached to this document, you will find charts that depict our Safety Programs (a component of Risk Management) and our Quality Improvement and Risk Management Continuum. In addition, the QI/RM Committee’s Annual Effectiveness Evaluation is also attached. The charts below summarize many of the surveys, studies and reports that have been accomplished in the SHS over the past year. As a nationally accredited health care agency, we are required to perform numerous quality assurance studies, chart reviews, etc., all of which contribute to our assessment activities. However, due to privacy issues, we are unable to share details of these finding.

Learning Outcome Study:
For 2005 – 06, the SHS performed one learning outcome study. The results of our Antibiotic Education study, performed at the BGSU Pharmacy, are attached. The tools utilized include a learning rubric and pre- and post- intervention questionnaires. We are particularly proud of this study, as we are confident that it represents the first medical learning outcome study at a university health service pharmacy and believe it is the first at a university health service. A manuscript is being finalized for publication in a peer reviewed journal. In addition, we have been asked to present on this topic at the NASPA Region 4-E Annual Meeting in November 2006.
For 2006 - 07, the SHS intends to use the same structure (rubric, pre- and post- intervention questionnaire) to evaluate a learning outcome in our medical clinic. This clinical topic will be chosen by the QI/RM committee upon their return in Fall 2006.
