The Data Hub and Resource Center was created in the early 1990's, when current University Architect Jim McArthur recognized the need for an improved system for the organization of drawings and documents in his department. He envisioned the Data Hub as an electronic repository for documents and the Resource Center where physical hard copies are stored. He felt easier access to the documents would increase awareness and efficiency. The scope of the position grew as technology expanded over the next several years:
- Aerial photography improves the quality of campus maps.
- Global Positioning System (GPS) accurately locates features of the campus.
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS) gives the ability to consolidate building and campus information onto a single map.
- Document management software enables select users outside our department and campus to access documents essential for their use.
- Standards manual brings consistency to documentation submitted to the department.
- Scanning & Organization of Drawings makes the process of accessing and distributing drawings quicker and easier.
In January 2005, Daniel Lemmerbrock was hired to fill the newly created position of Data Hub & Resource Center Manager. Since that time many of the original initiatives have been accomplished or are soon to be implemented. The results have been easier access to data, increase in the quality of data, greater efficiency for the department and the campus, and reduced risk.
