Accomplished Graduates are selected based on their outstanding professional achievements, community involvement and documented
demonstration of the five core values of BGSU: respect for one another, cooperation, intellectual and spiritual growth, creative
imaginings and pride in a job well done.
Recipients are honored by University representatives, friends and family in a formal on-campus ceremony. Honorees are selected
every other year, with the next class of Accomplished Graduates to be inducted in 2010.
2008 Honorees: College of Arts and Sciences
James L. Bailey ’67 James L. Bailey was chief operating officer of US Trust and member of the executive committee of Schwab from 2003 through
2007. He retired as executive vice president of Citibank in 2000, where he spent 28 years advancing through several assignments
in consumer banking. He currently serves on BGSU’s Building Dreams Campaign Steering Committee, is a board member for the
BGSU Foundation and is also a member of the Presidents Club.
Lynn Funkhouser ’64 Lynn Funkhouser is an internationally published photographer, author, lecturer, environmentalist and leader in dive travel.
Her photos have been published in calendars, ads and major magazines. In addition to being one of the founders of the International
Marinelife Alliance (IMA), she has served on the board of directors and acted as the vice president for the same organization
and has been active in several similar organizations.
Timothy F. Smith ’65, ’67 Timothy Smith is a retired senior vice president of the former Sky Insurance with more than 32 years of volunteerism to BGSU.
In addition to currently serving as chairman of the Advocates board for the College of Arts and Sciences as well as the Division
of Student Affairs, he is also treasurer of the Medici Circle board and a member of the Presidents Club and Presidents Club
advisory board.
Christopher J. Wade ’83 Christopher Wade is employed with Boston Private Bank & Trust Company as senior vice president. He has been with the bank
since 2000 starting as vice president and promoted in 2004 to his current position. Mr. Wade is currently training for the
112th running of the Boston Marathon and running for Read Boston, a charity that promotes literacy among Boston’s school age
children. He is also a member of the BGSU Presidents Club.
Dr. Marcietta Wilson-Coleman ’93 Dr. Marcietta Wilson-Coleman graduated from BGSU in 1993 with a B.S. degree in Biology and is now working with Community Health
Partners Physicians, Inc. She received the Student National Medical Association International Medicine Mission Fellowship
in 1999, the Sigma Sigma Phi Osteopathic Community Service Honor Society in 2000, and the Ortho Pharmaceutical Best Case Presentation
in 2001, among other honors as a student.
College of Business Administration
Shah Ashiquzzaman ’81, ’82 Shah Ashiquzzaman is a 1981 graduate with a B.S. in Economics and a 1982 graduate with an M.A. in Economics. He earned his
Ph.D. at Harvard University. He is the executive director of the Ahad Group in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Mr. Ashiquzzaman is also
a professor of economics at the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh where he teaches advanced economic theory, advanced microeconomics
and mathematical economics. He is very philanthropic and supports many programs around the world including Friends of the
World Food Program, UNICEF and the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralyzed in Bangladesh.
Michael E. Hoskins ’77 Michael Hoskins brings more than 20 years of experience in developing and managing software companies to his roles as chief
technology officer and general manager of the Integration Products business unit at Pervasive Software, Inc. Mr. Hoskins joined
Pervasive through its December 2003 acquisition of Data Junction Corporation, where he served as president for the prior 15
years.
Bill Ingram ’72 Bill Ingram is the President/CEO of White Castle System, Inc. and has been the CEO of White Castle since 1979. Mr. Ingram
has served on many BGSU boards and organizations including the Presidents Club, the Alumni board of trustees, the Foundation
board and the Alumni Advisory Council for the College of Business Administration. He was also a charter member of the Dean’s
Council for the College of Business Administration.
Earle Malm ’71 Earle Malm graduated from BGSU with a B.S. focusing on sales management. He is the CEO of Highland Capitol Management in San
Francisco, California. He was previously vice chairman for ValueClick Incorporated in Westlake Village, California and vice
president for Institutional Marketing at LGT Asset Management. He also served as president, COO and chief marketing officer
at ValueClick Incorporated and has worked in VP executive capacities with IBM, RCA and GE.
Karen Strauss ’77 Karen Strauss received her B.A. from BGSU with a Spanish major. While she was a student on campus, she served as president
of the Delta Gamma fraternity. Mrs. Strauss began working for the Masco Builder Cabinet Group in 1999 as vice president of
marketing & customer care and in 2006 was promoted to president. The company has over 6,000 employees, twelve manufacturing
facilities and nine direct market service locations.
College of Continuing and Extended Education
Daniel Ayalon ’83 Daniel Ayalon served as Israel’s Ambassador to the United States from July 2002 to November 2006, during which time relations
between the two countries reached an all-time high. Ambassador Ayalon is a graduate of Tel Aviv University with a B.A. in
economics and labor studies, and holds an M.B.A. from BGSU. He was also a Captain in the Israel Defense Forces Armored Corps.
Married to his wife Anne in 1980, together they have two daughters.
G. Karl Herold Jr. ’69 A partner with international law firm Jones Day, Karl Herold also founded Caduceus Global Advisors (CadGlo) in early 2008.
For more than 36 years, he has represented major corporations as well as medium-sized entities in transnational investments
around the world and has practiced in Cleveland, Paris, New York and Frankfurt, Germany. Mr. Herold received a political science
degree from BGSU.
College of Education and Human Development
Wiley Blevins ’87 Mr. Blevins received a B.S. degree in elementary education from BGSU in 1987, and an M.E. degree from the Graduate School
of Education at Harvard University in 1990. Mr. Blevins is vice president and editorial director of Macmillan/McGraw-Hill’s
education group. Prior to that, he held a number of positions with Scholastic, Inc. in its reading department and in teaching
resources.
Dr. Susan Finn ’66 Dr. Finn received a B.S. in Education from BGSU and went on to earn an M.S. in Public Health Nutrition from Case Western Reserve
University in 1968, as well as a doctorate degree in nutrition from The Ohio State University in 1973. Now the director of
industry communications and research for OSU’s Department of Nutrition, she supports many BGSU programs including the Fund
for BGSU, the School of Family and Consumer Sciences and the College of Education and Human Development.
Edward Reiter ’62 A retired senior chairman of the former Sky Financial Group, Edward Reiter complemented his BGSU education with studies at
The Ohio State University, University of Wisconsin and Harvard University. BGSU has benefited from Mr. Reiter’s volunteerism
through his involvement as chairman of the BGSU Foundation board, the Presidents Club, Alumni board and Falcon Club. Mr. Reiter
is married, has two children and lives in Bowling Green.
Willie J. Young ’72, ’73 Since graduating from BGSU, Willie J. Young has dedicated an entire career to understanding and addressing the many needs
of college students. For more than 35 years, Mr. Young’s efforts have benefited the student bodies of Defiance College (Ohio),
Mansfield State College (Pa.), Wittenberg University (Springfield, Ohio), Wilberforce University (Ohio) and finally The Ohio
State University, where he has served as director of off-campus student services since 1998.
Bowling Green State University - Firelands
Tina A. (Ackerman) Frederick ’86 Before graduating cum laude from BGSU, Tina Frederick was the tutoring co-chair with Beta Alpha Psi and an accounting and
statistics tutor on the Firelands campus. After 20 years working as a tax professional at Deloitte & Touche and then at Cedar
Fair LP, Mrs. Frederick now serves as chief financial officer for Daniel Frederick Architects, LLC. She also serves as tax
advisor to several local nonprofits and is a past member of BGSU Firelands Advisory Board.
Dr. Jo-Ann Lipford Sanders ’91, ’93 Dr. Jo-Ann Lipford Sanders is associate professor and director of graduate studies in counseling at Heidelberg College (Tiffin,
Ohio). She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from BGSU, and her doctorate from Kent State University in Counselor
Education. She also received a grant to study female socialization practices in West Africa, and currently directs the Emmanuel
Leadership and Training Centre.
Dr. Kristin Ryan ’00 Before graduating cum laude in biology and chemistry from BGSU, Kristin was the recipient of numerous scholarships for scholastic
achievement and was also a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, Mortar Board and several other honor societies.
She now works in the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and Doctors Hospital West and is working on completing
her general surgery residency in 2009.
College of Health and Human Services
Dr. Craig Newman ’75, ’77 Since 1994, Dr. Craig Newman has served as section head for audiology of the Head and Neck Institute at The Cleveland Clinic,
as well as professor for the Department of Surgery at the Clinic’s Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University.
Dr. Newman received his B.S. and M.A. degrees from BGSU before moving on to earn a doctorate in Audiology from Case Western
Reserve in 1982.
Bonnie R. Valiant ’61 In addition to her longtime work as a speech and hearing therapist in public schools, Bonnie Valiant has volunteered extensively
on behalf of the Spina Bifida Associations in Illinois and nationally. Now retired, Mrs. Valiant has also served the Lisle,
Ill. Chamber of Commerce, Community United Methodist Church in Naperville, Ill., and the Edward Foundation Board of Edward
Hospital.
College of Musical Arts
John R. Deliman ’79 After earning his B.M. degree from BGSU, Mr. Deliman received an M.M.E. degree from Florida State University in 1983. Mr.
Deliman was honored as Ohio String Teacher of the Year by the Ohio String Teachers Association in 2006, and is a two-time
recipient of the Golden Apple Award for excellence in education by Upper Arlington City Schools (2002 and 1996). He has served
on the education committee of the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra since 2005.
Edward Zunic ’89, ’95 Upon completing his education at BGSU, Edward Zunic continued a career that began in Texas, and ultimately moved on to Upper
Arlington City Schools (Ohio), where he now serves as department chair. Mr. Zunic has also been orchestra director at BGSU’s
Summer Strings Insititute since 2005. He was named “One of Five People to Watch” by the Upper Arlington News in 2007 and Public
School Teacher of the Year by OSTA in 2007.
Gretchen Zunic ’91 From BGSU, Gretchen Zunic went on to receive her M.A. degree from The Ohio State University in 1995. She has been an orchestra
director for Upper Arlington City Schools (Ohio) since 1996. She was recognized in 1995 for outstanding graduate achievement
in music education by OSU and was also a 2002 recipient of the Golden Apple Award for outstanding excellence in education
by Upper Arlington City Schools.
College of Technology
Eric J. Frankl ’86 After graduating from BGSU’s College of Technology with a degree in aviation management, Eric Frankl continued as a technical
sergeant in the Ohio Air National Guard – C130 Cargo Handling Operations until 1991. Since then, he has held management positions
for the Fort Wayne International Airport, Capital Airport, Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport and Toledo Express Airport, where
he has been airports director since 2006.
David M. Sokol ’84 David M. Sokol graduated from BGSU with a B.A. in Visual Communications Technology. He is now president of Garland Industries,
and has served in that role since 2004. He received the President’s Award from BGSU in 1984, as well as the President’s Award
from the Garland Company in 1997 and the Distinguished Sales and Marketing Award in 2000.
Brian L. Swope ’85 Brian Swope has 22 years of construction experience in a variety of construction disciplines including corporate office buildings,
bulk pharmaceutical manufacturing, government offices, education facilities, and country clubs. He is currently working for
The Quandel Group in Westerville, Ohio as senior project manager and was also named the Gilbane Company Central Region Builder
of the Year while employed with the Gilbane Building Company.
