COURSE DESCRIPTION

ACEN 100: College Reading/Learning Skills. Designed to improve basic reading/learning habits of college students' vocabulary, comprehension, note taking, time management, test taking, analytical and critical thinking.

The focus of this course is practicing efficient and effective study and reading skills. You will apply these skills to your target course (a gen ed course that you are taking). Because this is a skill-building course, you will need to practice, practice, practice until these skills become second nature to you. When you complete this course, you will have the skills that can be applied to any course that you take.

CAMPUS RESOURCES:

Students who are enrolled in ACEN 100 are encouraged to also sign up for a mentor group for one of your general education courses in the Study Skills Center (213 Moseley Hall, 372-8840). A mentor group is a small study group that is led by another student who has already taken the same course as you, received an “A” in that course, and has been nominated by your professor to lead these mentor groups. Mentor groups are small, usually only 5-7 students, and meet during a time that works for everyone in the group.

Students enrolled in a Math or Statistics course are encouraged to register for the Math and Stats Tutoring Center (208 Moseley Hall, 372-8009). The Math and Stats Tutoring Center is set up like a study hall, staffed with tutors who are Math majors and graduate students in Math and Statistics. This is a great place to get your questions answered as they arise and have a quiet space to do your math homework.

Students can get assistance on any writing project by scheduling an appointment in the Writing Center (303 Moseley Hall, 372-2221). Students who make an appointment can meet one-on-one with a Writing Center tutor regarding any writing assignment for any class.

Students are encouraged to make contact with your academic advisor, who can be a valuable resource to you while you begin your career at BGSU and throughout the next four years. You can find the name, address, email and phone of your advisor by logging onto MyBGSU and clicking on “My Academic Advisor” under “My Services”.
