Mentor groups are formed for students who want to have on-going help in the large lecture challenging courses. Students in each group are taking the same course from the same professor. They meet once a week for a 50-minute session with a Mentor who is faculty-recommended and who has earned an "A" in the course for which s/he is helping students.
The mentor is not a tutor. Instead, the mentor helps students learn how-to-learn material by:
1. asking students to tell what they do not understand in their own words
2. asking guiding questions that help the students to see relationships
3. helping students with time management and test-taking strategies
4. helping students to analyze their tests to see what study strategies need to be kept or changed
5. helping them with learning techniques that are specific to the demands of the course

Research has been conducted on 291 students who participated in mentor groups for 4 or more sessions. This research demonstrates that the participating students were more likely to earn A's, B's or C's than students coming from a similar academic background who did not use the center services. Also, students who used the mentor group services were much less likely to earn D's and F's than students who did not use the services.
