 Mission

The Math & Stats Tutoring (MAST) Center is committed to achievement in and appreciation of mathematics and statistics by assisting students to meet faculty course goals and objectives; working with students to develop confidence and competence in their math skills; and encouraging students to dispel myths surrounding mathematics learning and the negatives attitudes towards mathematics common in our country  all within a supportive learning environment.

Philosophy

The BGSU MAST Center supports campus wide learning by offering students a positive, supportive environment to study mathematics or statistics. The Center operates as an atmosphere where students learn to apply the concepts taught in lecture. Being application courses, mathematics and statistics are learned by practicing problem sets that illustrate various aspects of concepts. This is best done in a setting of supportive materials with people available to answer questions.  The Center works closely with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Department of Applied Statistics and Operations Research to ensure that course objectives are being met.

 Policies

The first step in using the Math and Stats Tutoring Center is to register.  It is necessary for MAST users to register each new semester.  Once registered, a student uses his or her registration number to access services.

The Math and Stats Tutoring Center is not:

  • A replacement for professor/instructor office hours. If you are having trouble with a mathematics or statistics course, see your professor/instructor and follow his or her recommendations.
  • A solutions factory for graded assignments. Tutors must follow professor/instructor guidelines in assisting with graded work. Until the coordinator of the Center is given the specifics by the professor/instructor, a "tutor hands-off graded work" policy will be enforced.
  • A substitute lecture for a missed class. Tutors are not instructors and therefore cannot lecture or teach material. They can assist in understanding concepts, though, and clarifying confusions and misconceptions.
  • A place where weeks of classes, homework and study can be made up with a tutor just prior to a test. At test time, priority will be given to students who use the Center on a regular basis. It's not possible to do well on a college mathematics or statistics exam if one has not been working or keeping up with the material all along.
